Clever Newsletter #11

Hello, friends...

Hello friends…

Can GenAI be your new golf stylist?

Generative AI has transitioned from pure news hype to finding more and more ways to fit into our everyday lives. We can use it to brainstorm ideas at work (suggest 3 names for my new product that does XYZ), we can use it at home to help with dinner (I have XYZ in my fridge, what can I make?), and now you can use it to look good on the course.

Connor Lindeman @MyGolfSpy recently used 3 of the leading AI models (Chat GPT, Bard, and CoPilot) to help suggest what golf shoes he should by for the upcoming season. Overall he was pleased with the results but was surprised by the variation between the AI’s. Much of this would come down to how each was trained (and how recently).

Seemingly every new golf driver commercial talks about how it was created with AI. Guess it’s just a matter of time before how we dress and what we dress is impacted by it as well.

For fun, we asked Google Gemini to create a new Clever the Optimist logo in the likeness of The Masters tournament. It couldn’t help but mis-spell both Optimist and Masters, but we love what it came up with (header logo at the top and below).

Brand Highlight

Smart golf brands are finding what used to be commodities and giving them new-life and a sense of cool through quality design. You’ve probably seen these sleek club brushes from Dimple & Divot. You’ve seen premium gloves from Asher and Palm. What you probably haven’t seen yet is a company focused just on making quality BUT COOL socks for golf. Enter del campo.

They have simple and minimal designed socks with logos for the wide spectrum of golf fans. We prefer the more traditional double-stripe in greens and blues. Are we good enough at golf to wear these socks to the course? Do we think we’re Adam Scott? No, no we don’t. But as long as you’re not pairing them with all-white FJ Premiere’s, then we say ‘bombs away.’

Peloton and house-label Defected launch new partnership

House-fans know Defected has been a leading label in the electronic music scene for years. And with a newly announced partnership with Peloton, fans can ride while listening to exclusive mixes from their favorite Defected DJ’s like Monki and Ferreck Dawn.

If you saw Peloton’s attempt at live DJ rides before, they were cringe. But to have real DJ’s now in the mix (pun v intended), and with a class in London later this summer announced to have Monki DJ live in-person, we expect everyone at Peloton HQ to be Melbourne shuffling right now.

Lululemon launches new nylon material

Continuing its efforts to become a more sustainable and circular brand, Lululemon has partnered with an eco tech company to introduce Nylon 6,6. This material is more recyclable version of nylon that is traditionally quite difficult to recycle and uses end-of-life material that would otherwise be thrown away. Will this new material take the attention away from Lulu’s harsh body-image reputation and help it regain its spot above all the new atheiesure competitors? Likely not, but it takes vision (and tons of money) to innovate new materials and that’s what Lululemon has done better than most.

Poshmark Find of the Week

Summer is around the corner, and you better get your footwear ready. To stick out from the crowd of On’s and Samba’s, we recommend an athletic classic - The Nike Huarache.

These bad boys feel like you’re wearing socks and are in mint condish. You can wear these to the gym, to the beach, heck even would work well on the golf course. We love the classic overtone of grey with a splash of teal and pink. Even if YOU don’t live in South Beach, your feet can.

What we’re listening to right now

Speaking of summer vibes, Bondax is back with a new album released earlier this year to keep you on the dancefloor all summer long. Same smooth vocals you expect from Bondax but with a nice, lighter twist. Our favorite is Fade (Ft. SHELLS) for the buttery vocals and disco energy. Do yourself a favor and listen to this next time you’re thinking of an upcoming vacation and you’ll be in beach-mode ASAP.

Best of luck in your Masters pools this week.
