Always fun week to watch Rory win, especially at Pebble, but we’re highlighting less golf this week and more products instead.
You’ll find lots of creative product design below. Re-thinking what a houseplant can live in, where and how you rest your beers on your car (outside, of course), vintage consumer electronics design, and even how to live (see: what we’re listening to).
It’s a collection of stories that leaves us optimistic that people are creative AF and that good design can easily spark joy. Enjoy!

Lemme cop those Jordans

Artist Shawn Farrow adds some clever spin on the boring plant box. Reminds us of using baby sneakers for putter covers, but the fact these are handmade from resin (and looks like real shoelaces?) make them even more cool. If you’re a sneakerhead and never got to pickup your pair of Jordan 11s, now’s your chance 🙂 .

Nick Saban’s Famous Nike Pegasus
Here at Clever we LOVE a good team-issued shoe. We grew up combing over the latest Eastbay catalog and the late 90’s & early 2000’s had some of the best team issued gear from Nike. Click the image above to learn about how Saban kept wearing the same 2006 Pegasus well after they were discontinued, even making his equipment staff grab more on eBay. A man of honor and tradition, and classic footwear.
There’s something about vintage audio gear
We recently came across Shelf Vintage and their collection of classic alarm clocks and radios from the glory days of consumer electronics and industrial design.
Ever since Dieters Rams designed a slew of products for Braun in the 1960s and 1970s, it’s been tough for modern electronics to look as interesting and have the same charisma. The iPhone (and even the first iPod) look like EVE and these old dogs look like WALL-E. But just remember who saves the world in that movie!
People will say vinyl sounds better than digital, that they don’t make cars like they used to, but they definitely don’t design personal electronics to look anywhere near as cool.
Did you know the C in CDJs is for coffee?
That’s definitely not what the C stands for BUT this does deserve some credit. Similar to the houseplant sculptures above. People taking 2 of their favorite things and combining them in clever ways. We see you.
What we’re listening to…
Been listening to a lot of Goth Babe recently. It’s not dance music, it’s not surfer rock, but it’s somewhere in between. Check out “Crocodile” and the album Lola, with a background short film on that album above.
Time to set sail!
