Is FC Barcelona kicking Nike to the curb?

FC Barcelona is considering breaking its contract with Nike and making their jerseys themselves. They feel that Nike should be paying much more and Barcelona’s experience making their own merch could mean they can make them just as good, and cheaper.

Could this spawn a new trend in pro sports? With all the MLB issues around their Nike pants, have jersey brands lost their leverage? That’s part of the issue with stagnant innovation, if no brand has a clear differentiator in their gear, maybe clubs CAN make their own and be just a good. Read more below.

Brand Highlight

Ralph Dunning was an early adopter of technical performance fabrics in the golf world through his Dunning Golf brand from the early 2000s. Zach Johnson on the 2007 Masters wearing Dunning Golf and soon it seemed everyone was wearing polyester polos on the course.

Fast forward 15 years and Ralph is back with a new brand called Foreign Rider co., but this time is leaning back into natural fabric and more sustainable practices. FR makes clothes and accessories for running, cycling, motorcycle riding, golf, and even button-downs for the office. With Ralph’s wealth of experience in the benefits of cotton vs. merino, FR has you covered with the right sustainable fabric for whatever piece you need.

While we all can’t have drive a vintage Triumph cafe racer to work, the aspiration of Foreign Rider is part of its energy. Our favorites are the Performance Hooded Long Sleeve T in Surf Blue and their 5 Pocket Organic Cotton Pant in Navy. Both are subtle designs for versatile pieces, just in time for spring.

What we’re listening to right now

UK producer Louis La Roche’s Sleepless Nights LP released nearly 5 years ago but All I Had has been living rent free in our brains the last few months. Synth-heavy with a slow and steady baseline, this is right up your alley if you like some chopped vocals that come together like a fine wine.

Fin.
